Firstly, there’s Legend, the Tom Hardy led film in which he plays both of the Kray twins, the gangsters who ran London in the 1960s, and were famous often seen hanging out amongst several celebrities. Tom Hardy offers a fantastic performance as both Reggie, the cool-headed leader of their criminal empire, and Ronnie, the psychotic, bisexual killer who loved nothing more some good old-fashioned violence. Directed by Brian Helgeland, this one is definitely going to be a major player in the Academy Awards.

Another one to keep an eye out for is The Danish Girl, Tom Hooper’s (director of former Best Picture winner, The King’s Speech) latest film. This film stars last year’s Best Actor winner, Eddie Redmayne, as Lili Elbe, the titular Danish girl, who was one of the first cases of a successful sex reassignment surgery. The film also stars Alicia Vikander, Matthias Schoenaerts, and Ben Whishaw, and is sure to be a likely choice for the People’s Choice Award, the top award at TIFF.

Another film that looks to be incredibly entertaining is the new Johnny Depp flick, Black Mass. This films looks to be a return to form for Depp as he plays Whitey Bulger, the famous criminal who led the Irish-American Winter Hill Gang in Boston, and acted as an informant to the FBI for 30 years. The film also stars Joel Edgerton as his handler in the FBI, and Benedict Cumberbatch as his brother, who is the State Senator for Massachusetts. For those who don’t want to travel down to the city to catch this one, it will be garnering a wide release on September 18th, during the festival, so you’ll be able to check it out closer to home.

If you’re feeling like a foreign film, the definitive one to check out would be Dheepan. This French film from famed director Jacques Audiard won the Palme d’Or (Golden Palm) at this years Cannes Film Festival, one of the other most prestigious film festivals in the world, and one of the most prestigious awards in the film industry. This film tells the tale of a Tamil Tiger escaping the war in Sri Lanka, and attempting to gain political asylum in France, pretending to be a family with a woman and her child. This film will be sure to thrill and amaze it’s audiences, and is a highly recommended film to check out this year at TIFF.

There are, of course, many others films you could want to check out between September 10th-20th, and many of these films are sure to entertain. If you miss any films, most of them will be getting wide or limited releases over the course of the next four months, so there’s no need to fret, as you will be able to see them eventually.
